Chapter Seven

Alice

Girls’ night. Friday. 8. Bring snacks. Clubhouse.

I dropped my phone on the counter and gazed out the kitchen window.

I was starting my next era.

Empty nest mom life.

My kids don’t love me anymore life.

I am a poor, pitiful woman without my kids giving me a purpose in life.

Or something like that.

“Mom,” Fox called.

“Yeah?”

“Uh, I know you said you don’t have any plans for the holidays anymore, but you are still making cookies on Saturday, right?”

I smiled softly and took a sip of my coffee. “I’ll probably do some baking on Saturday. I know Karmen, Nikki, Wren, Cora, Wendy, Mayra, Raven, and Carnie are coming over.” I had told the Girl Gang about me becoming a kidless mom, and I was surprised to find out they were all feeling the same way. We spent a good chunk of our lives raising these kids, and then they just took off to leave us all alone.

So, the Girl Gang was coming back with a vengeance.

First up, girls' night, and then cookie baking.

“Is it okay if Bay comes over to help? I mentioned it to her before the calendar got erased, and she just asked me if we were still on for Saturday.”

“Your friends are always welcome, Fox.”

“Cool, because I think Scout is going to come too.” He moved next to me and gently bumped into me. “Watching the cows?” he asked.

“Aren’t I always?” I laughed. When Wrecker and I bought this house, this window over the sink that overlooked the pasture was the reason I knew this was going to be my forever house. What better way to start the morning than to sip your coffee and watch beautiful Highland cows graze?

“Any plans today?” he asked.

“I need to finish up my Christmas shopping and get some things for the weekend. What about you?” I asked.

“Well, I need to start my Christmas shopping and hopefully finish it today, too.”

I glanced at him. “I am not doing your Christmas shopping for you, Fox.”

“What? No,” he muttered. “I was just thinking maybe I could go with you when you go shopping,” he suggested.

“Did your father put you up to this?” I laughed.

Fox shook his head. “No. I didn’t even mention it to him.”

“I’m going to be gone most of the day, Fox, and I don’t want to have to drop you off at home in the middle of it.”

He shrugged. “I don’t have anything else to do today. Maybe we could get lunch at the food court like we used to do.”

“I don’t want your pity, Fox. If you have other things to do today, go do them. I will be fine by myself.” Sure, I was upset that the kids were growing up, but it wasn’t like I couldn’t be left alone.

“What I need to do is get presents for Dad, Eden, and Bay.” Fox steepled his hands in front of him. “Please, Mom. I planned on asking you to go with me before your breakdown. I have zero pity for you.”

I rolled my eyes. “I did not have a breakdown, Fox.
